Priti Tatiya
Founder of architecture and interior design-based company PTA Designs
Always inclined towards arts, crafts and colours, Priti Tatiya has harnessed them on her journey to design and articulate spaces. Working alone since 1996, she formed PTA Designs in 2010 in Bhopal. She loves to work upon almost everything that comes to her, be it interiors, architecture, landscaping, renovation, refurbishing or redesigning, customising it to the client’s requirements and aura. India infuses her work. She loves to experiment with her designs and create a fusion of styles, using Indian traditional elements and vintage pieces, transforming them into contemporary designs. Old traditional doors and windows, wooden panels, columns from South India, even small borders of arches, and the Indian arts such as zardosi work and Gond paintings all find their way into Priti’s designs in various experimental ways.
Excerpts from an interview:
“While the industry is moving more towards modern and minimal, we are still attached to our roots; we celebrate the various art forms and traditional elements of our soil. I feel there is a lot to explore of our art and crafts, and this way we have community involvement in our work, which adds a lot of warmth to it.
“I think it’s beautiful how we get such a diverse range of art forms and elements in the same country, with different parts offering a very different style. And, if we focus on the details, every art form has a versatility that allows it to be used differently. Actually, there is a oneness in Indianness.
“We can encourage more people to invest in celebrating Indianness through our own work. We have to work on product development to make it more user friendly and accessible, and capable of being used in multiple ways. We should provide products in such a way that it benefits the artisans financially and gives them recognition, so that their generations carry forward Indian art with more finesse and passion.
“Championing India is a beautiful way of expressing love for our country. We have such a vast variety of arts and crafts in our country, that we just have to take a dip in this ocean and we have everything to be proud of!
“Avoid being influenced by social media, and work with your people, your material, which you can connect with easily. It will make you proud of yourself and the country!”
