A Maiden Individual CWG Gold For India’s Ace Shuttler PV Sindhu
It’s the last and final day at the Commonwealth Games and India has opened day 11’s medal quest with a gold, courtesy of PV Sindhu.
It is Sindhu’s maiden individual gold at the Commonwealth Games. PV Sindhu defeated Michelle Li of Canada 21-15, 21-13 to win the women’s singles gold medal, a well-deserved victory for the champion. Despite her injury, Sindhu took control of the game from the outset.
She never allowed Li the tiniest chance to get back into the game. Sindhu dominated both sets and completed a clean sweep winning it 21-15, 21-13. This is her third solo medal at the CWG, having earned bronze in 2014 in Glasgow and silver in 2018 on the Gold Coast. She worked hard for her maiden gold, which she achieved comfortably.
Sindhu was in excellent form after reaching double figures in her second set. She scored six consecutive points to make the score 15-8 and took the lead, putting pressure on her Canadian opponent to make a comeback. For each successful serve and point scored, the fans chanted “India India, Sindhu For Gold” and stood behind her, boosting her morale.
In this CWG, Sindhu’s road to the final was not easy, as she fought hard in every match. Her quarterfinal match against Goh Jin Wei was a nail-biter in which she fought back after dropping the first set and won the match by taking the next two deciding sets. She defeated Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min 21-19 21-17 in a semi-final match that lasted over an hour.
Sindhu’s victory also means India now ranks fourth with 19 gold medals, surpassing New Zealand and placing them just behind Australia, England, and Canada.
