Reconoce que las canciones de esa época “no siempre son buenas consejeras”, o incluso incluyen un lenguaje abusivo, y dijo que quiere que su música conmueva a la gente a la vez que envía mensajes diferentes: “mensajes mucho más abiertos, mucho más feministas, mucho más igualitarios”.

Marchita es sobre el primer amor de Estrada y la profunda pena que acompañó su fin. Grabó el álbum hace dos años, y al escucharlo ahora, percibe una cierta ingenuidad. “Solo alguien con una inocencia así podría escribir cosas tan solemnes”, dice. “Es más como un duelo de perder esa primera idea que una tiene del amor”.

Al igual que en su discurso cotidiano, las letras de Estrada se despliegan con un magnetismo poético que florece en español. Estrada a menudo tiene las texturas románticas del poeta nicaragüense Rubén Darío, o quizás de la poeta y crítica uruguaya Idea Vilariño, cuyas obras devoró cuando escribía el álbum. En “Te guardo”, canta: “Tengo dos besos pendientes/ Uno por cada mejilla/ Y un abismo de cristal/ Por cada herida”.

Líneas como esas atrajeron inmediatamente a la gigante del pop-rock Julieta Venegas. “Está como más cercano a una construcción poética, en el sentido de que es algo que se puede sostener solo”, dijo Venegas en una entrevista telefónica. “No es como que solamente esté acompañando a la música”.

Venegas conoció a Estrada a través del músico David Aguilar, y llegó a ver un espectáculo de Estrada en Buenos Aires. “Tiene una relación muy intensa con la palabra que me pareció genial en una compositora tan chica”, dijo Venegas. “Sus canciones tienen elementos, como que tiene mucha profundidad: tiene una historia de imágenes”.

Gustavo Guerrero, productor de Marchita, dijo que fue “un reto para no quitarle fuerza y expresión al arte de Silvana”. Las canciones, las melodías y las letras estaban tan bien escritas que corría el riesgo de “sobreproducir o de pulir demasiado algo que ya está”, explicó en una llamada telefónica. Juntos, trataron de mantener la energía minimalista de sus interpretaciones en vivo, en las que ella manda en el escenario, acompañada solo por su voz, sus letras y su cuatro.

“Llevo mucho tiempo trabajando en eso”, dijo Estrada. “¿Cómo puedo ser fuerte, cómo puedo ser contundente con lo mínimo siempre, no? ¿Que no piensas que a veces eso puede ser como muy femenino?”, se preguntó. “Veo a mi madre que resuelve todo con poquito dinero, poquitos ingredientes, poquito de todo. Y es superfuerte. Y a veces siento que es lo mismo con la música”.
