Why Hima Das is one of India’s Biggest Medal Prospects at Commonwealth Games 2022
One of the biggest names in Indian athletics right now is Hima Das. However, despite her numerous achievements, she is yet to win a medal at any big multi-sport even like the Olympics, Asian Games or Commonwealth Games. The 22-year-old has qualified as a part of the 4x100m women’s relay team at Birmingham, and will be looking to win a medal.
Hima Das is one of the biggest names right now when it comes to athletics in India. However, she was an unknown quantity to the general public back in 2018 when she was selected for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Das was, however, one of the biggest rising names in the Indian athletics circuit having won the bronze medals at the national junior meet in the 100m race. She also had impressive showings in the Asian and World Youth Championships in 2017
However, in 2018 she debuted in the international stage at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, and impressed one and all. She qualified for the finals, and in the final race she finished sixth. In both the races she clocked her personal best timings. However, the 2018 Commonwealth Games was just a stepping stone for Hima.
Later that year, Hima clocked a timing of 51.46 seconds in the 400m finals of the IAAF World U-20 Championships, thus clinching a gold medal at the event, becoming the first Indian woman to do so. Since then her stocks have risen through the roof, garnering appreciation from all quarters including the legendary PT Usha who called her a generational talent. She now even holds the 400m national record of 50.79 seconds which she achieved at the 2018 Asian Games.
However a medal at one of the prestigious multi-sport events still haunts the 22-year-old. In fact one of the biggest setbacks of her career happened in 2021, when she could not qualify for the Tokyo Olympics due to an injury. She even suffered a near-death experience when she had serious bout of COVID-19. This debacle, had motivated the Assam-born runner to come back even stronger.
Hima, along with Dutee Chand, Srabani Nanda, MV Jilna, NS Simi and S Dhanalakshmi have qualified for the 4×100 m relay event of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. With experience under her belt this time around, and in the presence of another star runner in Dutee, Hima has a big chance of clinching a medal at the event in Birmingham.
Also, having missed out on the Olympics seemed to have lit a fire under her belly, as she is now even more determined to clinch her first major senior international medal. After her injury and COVID-19 diagnosis, Hima came back on the track at the 61st National Interstate Athletics Championship in Chennai as she clinched a gold medal in the 100m race. So, she is in red-hot form too going into the Commonwealth Games 2022.
In fact, Hima was part of the team that registered the national record in 4x100m relay at the Indian Grand Prix in 2021. So, it is a proven fact that she knows what it feels to be part of a medal-winning relay team. All these factors definitely make Hima one of the top contenders to clinch a medal for India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
