Hyundai Motor India Targets 20% Women Representation in Executive Workforce by 2030

Automaker says women already account for 45% of its management and engineering trainees recruited in 2026 as it expands initiatives focused on career development, leadership and workplace inclusion

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has announced a target of increasing women’s representation in its executive workforce to 20% by 2030, as the automaker works to build a broader and more inclusive talent pipeline.

Women currently account for more than 8% of HMIL’s executive workforce, which comprises more than 4,000 employees. At the same time, approximately 45% of the management trainees and engineer trainees recruited by the company in 2026 are women, according to Hyundai Motor India’s September 7 announcement.

The company said women’s participation is increasing across several functions, including manufacturing, engineering, research and development, sales, service, corporate functions and leadership positions.

Building a Larger Women Talent Pipeline

HMIL’s 2030 target is part of a broader diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) strategy aimed at attracting, developing and retaining employees while creating clearer pathways for career progression.

The company said its recruitment approach includes gender-balanced hiring practices, expanded campus engagement and competency-based assessments. The strategy is also designed to strengthen representation of women in future leadership positions.

The high proportion of women among 2026 management and engineering trainees is particularly significant because these early-career roles can form an important pipeline for future technical and managerial positions.

Women Recorded 23% Promotion or Elevation Rate in FY26

Hyundai Motor India also reported that its women employees recorded a 23% promotion or elevation rate during FY2025-26.

The company said women employees have access to learning, development and leadership programmes designed to support career progression.

One of its initiatives is TrailblazHER, a leadership-development programme focused on high-potential women professionals. It includes capability building, mentoring, career acceleration and preparation for future leadership responsibilities.

Support for Women Returning to Work

HMIL’s Women @ Work 2.0 initiative includes measures intended to support employees through different stages of their careers.

The programme includes maternity and parental support, childcare assistance, workplace flexibility, performance-continuity measures and employee engagement and reintegration programmes.

The company has also introduced crèche facilities at manufacturing plants, wellness and relaxation rooms, and additional safety, mobility and workplace-support measures.

These measures are intended to address some of the practical challenges that can affect women’s ability to remain in and progress through the workforce.

Expanding Women’s Participation in Manufacturing and Engineering

The announcement is notable because Hyundai Motor India’s target covers the executive workforce, while the company is also reporting increased participation of women in technical and manufacturing-related functions.

Women are increasingly being recruited into areas such as engineering, manufacturing and R&D, in addition to corporate and commercial roles.

For the automotive sector, this creates opportunities for women to participate in areas ranging from vehicle engineering and manufacturing to digitalisation, software, research and future mobility technologies.

HMIL said it believes a workforce drawing on diverse experiences and perspectives can contribute to innovation, collaboration and organisational resilience.

Health and Workplace Well-Being

Hyundai Motor India’s inclusion strategy also incorporates employee health and well-being programmes.

According to the company, initiatives include preventive health programmes, women’s health awareness, cancer screening, stress-management support and healthcare services.

The company has linked these initiatives to its broader ESG agenda and to the objectives of UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality and SDG 8 on decent work and economic growth.

Part of a Wider Automotive Industry Shift

HMIL’s announcement comes amid broader efforts within India’s automotive industry to increase women’s participation.

Business Standard reported that other automakers have also announced workforce-diversity targets and initiatives. Toyota Kirloskar Motor, for example, announced a target of 30% women’s representation by 2030 in 2024, while JSW MG Motor India reported significant female participation in parts of its workforce in 2025.

The growing focus extends beyond corporate offices. Automotive companies are increasingly looking at women’s participation in manufacturing, engineering, technology, sales, service and leadership roles.

Looking Toward 2030

HMIL‘s target means the company intends to increase women’s representation among its executives from more than 8% currently to 20% by 2030.

The company’s latest recruitment figures suggest that women are already becoming a larger part of its incoming talent pool, with women making up about 45% of its management and engineering trainees recruited in 2026.

The challenge over the coming years will be translating this growing entry-level representation into sustained career progression and increased representation at senior levels.

For women professionals seeking careers in India’s automotive and mobility sector, the expansion of opportunities across engineering, manufacturing, R&D, technology, sales and leadership could create additional pathways into an industry undergoing significant technological change.

Hyundai Motor India‘s 2030 goal therefore represents not only a workforce target but also a longer-term effort to develop a stronger pipeline of women professionals across different levels of the organisation.
