“Our Mission Is To Propel India Into Becoming A Soft Superpower”

Aneesha Jyoti was 17 when she and her family moved to Canada. Her parents ensured that they did not lose touch with their culture, that they remained proud of their Indian roots. She returned to India nine years later to pursue an MBA from ISB Hyderabad, bringing with her the personal realisation of how Indians in the diaspora have a strong desire to connect with Indian culture and how they struggle with learning their mother tongue. She found that there weren’t any engaging platforms in the market to learn or practise Indian languages, and this led her to establish Language Curry, a regional language app, with Puneet Singh and Vatsala Sharma in 2018. Although the idea for Language Curry was to keep the global audience in mind, it soon found favour even within India. Today, 1.5 million people, most of them in India, learn Indian languages through the app.
Excerpts from an interview:
“Ours is the only app focussing on Indian languages – that sets us apart. The heart of the app is how we integrate cultural learning with language learning.
“India is of global interest not only as a massive economic power, but also as a highly distinct soft power. During COVID, we all witnessed the virality of the namaste, yoga and Ayurveda. Make in India is unbreakable and unstoppable because of the economic potential combined with the uniqueness and power of our culture. Make in India also results in Make for India.
“At Language Curry, we feel responsible for connecting the world to India through languages and culture. We strive to make learning simple and, most importantly, relevant. If you study a language, you should be able to talk like a native speaker, using proper grammar and pronunciation. Our approach was established through years of research and aids in the simplification of language learning using effective tools. Our greatest privilege is our team and mentors in India. The pool of resources is not only technically proficient but also enthusiastic about our mission. By celebrating Indian languages and culture, and, consequently, India and Indians, our mission is to propel India into becoming a soft superpower.
