Big News! Army to Induct Women in Artillery Regiment
The Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande announced that the Army is going to commission women officers in the Regiment of Artillery. The Army chief talked about the move during the Chief of Army Staff Annual Press Conference 2023 on January 12. During the presser, COAS General Manoj Pande mentioned that the commissioning of women officers comes as a part of human resource management in the force.
“In terms of human resource management, the first thing is the commissioning of women officers into the Regiment of Artillery. This proposal has been forwarded to the government,” said Army Chief General Manoj Pande.
Hoping that the proposal will be accepted by the Government of India, the Army Chief called the move to include women officers in the Artillery regiment significant and said that women have been performing exceedingly well in the Army.
The Artillery Regiment is a combat or fighting arm of the Indian Army that provides massive firepower during ground operations. There are over 280 artillery regiments in the Indian Army which include big guns like M-77 Howitzers, K-9 Vajra self-propelled guns, Bofors howitzers and more.
The Army Chief is of the belief that women will perform well in all duties and thus their induction into the Regiment of Artillery is a significant decision. During the press conference, the military leader also mentioned the granting of Permanent Commission (PC) to women in the Army.
While interacting with the media during the press conference, the COAS said, “The Gender empowerment in terms of the women in the Army has again been the focus area and we have made good progress.”
According to the Indian Army, the force regularly reviews its approach to the employment of women in combat roles within the armed forces, which is a continuously evolving process. Currently, the Army is commissioning women into ten streams. Those streams include Corps of Engineers, Corps of Signals, Army Air Defence, Army Service Corps, Army Ordnance Corps, Corp of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers, Army Aviation Corps, Intelligence Corps, Judge Advocate General Branch and Army Education Corps. Additionally, there are women-only entries in the Armed Forces Medical Services where they are commissioned as Doctors and Military Nurses. In a significant move, the Army now also inducts women in the Corps of Military Police.
The entry of women cadets in the NDA, the permanent commissioning of SSC women officers, and the hiring of women as Provost JCOs/OR are among the other recent progress made for female Defence aspirants.
Earlier this year, for the first time a woman officer of the Indian Army, Captain Shiva Chauhan, had been posted at the world’s highest battlefield, Siachen Glacier’s Kumar Post for an operational deployment. In December 2022, in a major boost to women’s empowerment, Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar declared that the Indian Navy is looking forward to opening all its branches for women from 2023. With these major developments, the year 2023 would be a year of transformation for the Indian Armed Forces.
