MUMBAI: Singer Lata Mangeshkar succumbed to septic shock with multi-organ failure at Breach Candy Hospital on Sunday morning after battling Covid-19 and related complications for 29 days.
Her team of doctors from Breach Candy, who were present at the funeral in Shivaji Park, were personally thanked by PM Narendra Modi for looking after her.
The 92-year-old singer was admitted to the hospital on January 9, two days after she had tested positive for coronavirus at home. She was advised hospitalisation as she had developed Covid pneumonia. As her condition deteriorated, she had to be put on non-invasive ventilator and eventually on mechanical ventilator.
After a few days though, her condition showed improvement and she was extubated (taken off the mechanical ventilator) on January 27. But her condition took a turn for the worse once again and she went back on a ventilator a few days ago.
The singer also had pre-existing ailments, including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.
N Santhanam, CEO of Breach Candy Hospital, said Dr Pratit Samdani and a team of three resident doctors were looking after her round-the-clock. “Other specialists were also roped in to treat complications,” he said.
Dr Samdani, who has been Mangeshkar’s family physician for three years, said it was a “personal loss”.
Hospital sources said she was surrounded by her family members and loved ones during her last hours. Her sister Usha Mangeshkar, brother Hridaynath and their children were present at the time of her death.
