BRS leader K Kavitha holds round table discussion over Women’s Reservation Bill
BRS MLC K Kavitha held a round table discussion in New Delhi to discuss the way forward for the tabling of the Women’s Reservation Bill.
By India Today News Desk: BRS MLC K Kavitha held a round table discussion in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss the way forward for the tabling of the Women’s Reservation Bill. 13 political parties and several civil society organisations joined the discussion organised by Bharat Jagruthi, the private foundation founded by the BRS leader.
K Kavitha called for greater participation of MPs in the Parliament to ensure that the ruling government makes way for the tabling of the Bill. After holding a protest at Jantar Mantar on March 10, Kavitha held a round of discussions where she said that building pressure on a government which has a clear majority for the long-pending Women’s Reservation Bill is the need of the hour.
She thanked all the dignitaries for their presence, while opening the house for a conversation with students. The event was attended by MPs from BRS Party, JMM, DMK, RJD, Samajwadi Party, CPI, Shiv Sena, AAP, RLD, RSP (Kerala), CPM, VCK Party, Azad Samaj Party, farmer union leaders, women’s organisations and students. Several leaders spoke on the Women’s Reservation Bill.
Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi asked why the government in power cannot table the Women’s Reservation Bill when the makers of the Indian Constitution could ensure that women were given an equal right to vote. She requested more women in legislative discourse to start demanding the same.
RJD Leader and MP Professor Manoj Jha, said, “We stand in solidarity with the bill…We must look for reservation within reservation…We must have a strategy whereby issues are raised in Parliament as well as outside. Mas movement on the road brings Parliament on its knees.”
CPI MP and senior leader, Binoy Biswam said, “The patriarchal tendencies have come in the way of the Women’s Reservation Bill. The rights of women, at this stage in the 21st century, are denied even on matters of giving birth, and even with respect in the Parliament. We view this initiative by K Kavitha as a movement.”
RLD Women’s Wing Chief Pratibha Singh and leader Bhupinder Chaudhary, echoed the sentiment of empowering women and most importantly those in the rural belts who are unaware of the discussions taking place around the bill right now.
Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji from the JMM said, “On one end, we are celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav and on the other hand, in today’s time, the representation of women in the parliament is abysmally low.”
Rajya Sabha MP from Aam Aadmi Party, Raghav Chaddha extended support to MLC Kavitha’s initiative demanding the Women’s Reservation Bill and said, “The government has a clear majority, it must be put to use to ensure reforms and bills of greater good are taken care of.”
MP from the Samajwadi Party and senior party leader ST Hassan said, “A country cannot be a superpower if the women of the country are not given their due share and respect and, most importantly, adequate representation”.
Thol Tirumavalan, MP from VCK Party said, “The Women’s Reservation Bill is the need of the hour and the delay is a grave injustice towards the people of this nation.”
The discussion was also attended by Farmer Union Leaders Gurnam Singh Chaduni and Rajewal, who said that women’s participation during the farmers’ protest played a key role that later forced the government to roll back the three farm laws. They said a delay in the Women’s Reservation Bill is not the solution.
