FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup 2023 basketball: Indian women’s team beats Hong Kong, loses to New Zealand in qualifiers
The Indian team, currently second on the Qualifying Draw A points table, will play Sri Lanka and Tahiti in qualifier matches on Thursday.
The Indian women’s 3×3 basketball team lost to New Zealand before beating Hong Kong in the qualifiers of the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup 2023 basketball tournament at the Singapore Sports Hub OCBC Square on Wednesday.
India, ranked 60th in the world, are in the Qualifying Draw A of the women’s FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup 2023 with New Zealand (world No. 42), Sri Lanka (world No. 68), Hong Kong (world No. 112) and Tahiti (world No. 163).
The teams will play each other in a round robin format and the winner of the Qualifying Draw A will join Malaysia and Mongolia in Pool C of the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup 2023 main draw.
The Indian 3×3 basketball women’s team opened their campaignwith a 20-9 loss to New Zealand in their first match. Dharshini Thirunavukkarasu top-scored for the team with three points while Raspreet Sidhu, Pushpa Senthil Kumar and Kavya Singla scored two points each.
For New Zealand, Sharne Pupuke-Robati topped the scoring chart with seven points while Krystal Leger-Walker (six points), Esra Lisa McGoldrick (four points) and Lauryn Rose Hippolite (three points) also found the hoop.
In the second qualifier, India managed to register their first victory with a 17-13 win over Hong Kong. Dharshini Thirunavukkarasu and Pushpa Senthil Kumar scored eight points each while Raspreet Sidhu scored one point to aid India’s triumph.
After Wednesday’s matches, India are placed second in Qualifying Draw A standings with one victory and 26 points from two games. New Zealand top the table with two wins and 39 points.
The Indian women’s team, who won the inaugural edition in 2013, will play Sri Lanka and Tahiti on Thursday.A total of 12 teams, divided into four groups, will compete in the main draw of each men’s and women’s competition at the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup 2023. The top two teams from each pool will qualify for the quarter-finals.
The Indian men’s 3×3 basketball team, currently world No. 49, is in Pool C of the main draw alongside world No. 16 China. They will open their campaign on Saturday.
The champions of the men’s and women’s FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup 2023 basketball tournament will earn a spot in one of the 3×3 basketball Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQT) for the Paris 2024 Summer Games.
