A sus noventa y pocos, Maybelle Blair entró a una tienda de productos deportivos con una misión: probarse un par de tachones.

El vendedor sugirió que tal vez había querido pedir unos zapatos deportivos. Pero Blair, quien fue lanzadora de la liga de béisbol femenina All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, insistió en unos tachones de béisbol. “Me vio como si estuviera loca”, recordó Blair, de 95 años, en una entrevista reciente.

Los tachones al fin aparecieron.

“Me los puso en los pies. Me levanté y anduve por el lugar. Escuché ese clic-clac en mi cabeza y nunca me había sentido más feliz”, comentó Blair.

Después de dar una vuelta por la tienda con los tachones, Blair se los quitó, los puso en la caja y le dijo al vendedor que no se los iba a llevar.

“Fue una gran emoción en mi vida, tan solo ponerme los tachones y volver a marchar”, mencionó.

El sonido de los tachones evocó para Blair los recuerdos de ponerse el uniforme del equipo Peoria Redwing y entrar al campo de juego, su ritual favorito del béisbol.

“Me sentí muy orgullosa de mí porque caí en cuenta: pude practicar el juego que adoré y atesoré”, comentó. “Me ponía los tachones y marchaba por el pasillo hacia el campo, clic-clac, clic-clac. Era la música más hermosa que he escuchado en mi vida”.

Blair fue una de las más de 600 mujeres en unirse a la liga de béisbol creada en 1943 en respuesta a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Al reclutarse a los hombres jóvenes para el servicio militar, se propagó el miedo de que la guerra fuera el fin del béisbol profesional y sus estadios. Así que las mujeres salieron a jugar en lugar de ellos.

La liga se cerró en 1954 y fue resucitada en la película de 1992 Un equipo muy especial. Amazon Prime estrenará en agosto su propia versión en una nueva serie de televisión bajo el mismo título.

Blair jugó en la liga solo en la temporada de 1948, pero fue una de las muchas barreras que derribó en su vida. Después tuvo una carrera de 37 años en Northrop Corp. (ahora conocida como Northrop Grumman), donde se convirtió en la tercera gerenta de la empresa. Blair ha sido fundamental en la promoción de la historia de la liga y de las mujeres en el béisbol y es una de las consejeras fundadoras del Centro Internacional de Béisbol Femenino en Rockford, Illinois.

En junio, Blair derribó otra barrera. Durante una gira de promoción con la prensa para la nueva serie, Blair reveló un secreto que había guardado durante mucho tiempo.

“Creo que es una gran oportunidad para que estas niñas beisbolistas se den cuenta de que no están solas y que no deben ocultarse”, dijo, al anunciar públicamente que era gay. “Me escondí durante 75, 85 años, y en realidad, en esencia, esta es la primera vez que salgo del clóset en mi vida”.

El anuncio se recibió con vítores. Blair mencionó que le inspiró ver a mujeres jóvenes jugando béisbol en un evento que organizó hace poco Baseball For All, una agrupación que promueve la inclusión en el deporte. El tiempo que pasó trabajando con los productores en la serie de Amazon, la cual abarca una visión más completa de la historia de la liga, incluidos temas sobre sexualidad y racismo, también la hizo reflexionar.

“Pude ver sus luchas, sus ojitos y su amor por el juego”, comentó Blair para referirse a las jóvenes beisbolistas. “Me dije: ‘¿Sabes, Maybelle? A los 95 años, tal vez no sea tan malo. Tal vez tu familia no va a repudiarte. Debes hacerlo’”.

“Estaba sentada en ese escenario, abrí la boca y salió”, continuó. “Me sentí aliviada”.

Blair fue una de las cerca de 20 exjugadoras con las que el productor, Will Graham, y la actriz Abbi Jacobson hablaron para el desarrollo de la serie. Graham comentó que Blair había sido franca con ellos sobre su sexualidad durante la creación de la serie, pero no esperaba que saliera del clóset en un foro público. La llamó un “ser humano extraordinario”.

“Tendemos a creer que la vida de las personas queer antes de la Revuelta de Stonewall era bastante desalentadora y claro que fue difícil y lo sigue siendo de muchas maneras. Pero ella encontró una alegría y se encontró a sí misma y creo que las personas queer siempre hacen eso cuando y donde sea que estén”, comentó Graham. “Estoy muy agradecido de que sea parte de mi vida”.

Blair empezó a ser consciente de su sexualidad en quinto grado, y su primer amor llegó cuando estaba en el último año de secundaria. “Nunca la olvidaré”, dijo. Pero mantuvo sus relaciones en privado y nunca se casó.

“Estaba muy preocupada por mi familia, porque en aquella época nadie sabía nada de que la gente fuera gay o lo que fuera. Era muy angustioso”, dijo.

En el campo de béisbol encontró el lugar donde fue más feliz. Blair, quien creció en Texas y California, comentó que fue “una aficionada al béisbol desde la cuna”.

“Si no lo hubiera sido, mi padre se habría deshecho de mí”, comentó con una risa. “Jugar béisbol era el único entretenimiento que teníamos además de domar caballos”.

Blair estaba jugando softbol en Redondo Beach, California, cuando llegó un ojeador. Su madre se resistió a la idea en un principio, pero, cuando se enteró de que Blair iba a ganar 55 dólares a la semana, subió a Blair a un tren con dirección a Chicago.

Cuando Blair llegó a la liga, se enteró de que “había más gente como yo y nos dieron más libertad a esas chicas y a mí”, comentó para referirse al inusual entorno inclusivo de la liga. Las beisbolistas solían reunirse en Chicago algún día libre e iban a un bar gay, recordó Blair.

Sin embargo, fuera de la liga de béisbol, Blair no encontró el mismo refugio. Blair mencionó que tenía una alta acreditación de seguridad mientras trabajaba en el bombardero B-2 de Northrop. Esa responsabilidad también venía acompañada de un escrutinio.

“Iban a preguntarles a tus vecinos sobre ti”, recordó. “Era estresante. Siempre que me mudaba, temía que alguien descubriera que era gay y, si eso hubiera pasado, me habrían despedido en ese instante”.

Finalmente, Blair se jubiló. En estos días, dedica su vida a incorporar a mujeres y niñas al béisbol, en esencia por medio del Centro Internacional de Béisbol Femenino. El centro educativo sigue en etapas de recaudación de fondos, pero, “hasta que no se ponga la primera piedra, debo seguir adelante”, comentó.

Blair espera vivir por lo menos hasta los 100 años y planea transmitirle a la siguiente generación algunas de las lecciones que ha aprendido del béisbol.

“Estas chicas se lo merecen; necesitan ayuda”, opinó Blair. “Algunas de estas chicas no tienen un lugar donde puedan jugar béisbol. Haremos una liga muy especial otra vez”.
