LA28 Women’s 100m Schedule Poses Exciting New Challenge For The Likes Of Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, Julien Alfred And Sha’Carri Richardson
With all races – from prelims to the final – scheduled to take place on Day 1 of the Games, the battle to be crowned the ‘fastest woman in the world’ will be both a fresh challenge and a dazzling celebration of women’s sport
The Olympic Games LA28 may be close to three years away, but the excitement surrounding them just reached a new level.
With the announcement of the athletics women’s 100m schedule on Wednesday 12 November, the challenge facing the greatest female sprinters on the planet is clear: the gold medal will be won after a single day of racing, with everything from the preliminary round to the final taking place on Day 1 of the Games (Saturday, 15 July 2028).
While it will be a long while until we know the makeup of the field, the likes of Paris 2024 100m champion Julien Alfred, world title holder Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and reigning Olympic silver medalist Sha’Carri Richardson will need to find a new gear if they are to triumph in Los Angeles.
At the last Olympics in Paris, the preliminary rounds and heats took place a day before the semi-finals and finals. However, the decision to condense all of the races into one day at LA28 will bring a fresh look to the competition, as the world’s best battle for glory in the blue riband event of track & field.
The 100m is just one of the women’s finals that will take place on 15 July 2028. Day 1 will see the most women’s finals held in a single day in Olympic history.
The LA28 Games will also feature a record-breaking number of female Olympians, with every team sport featuring an equal or greater number of women’s teams compared to men’s teams for the first time ever, and 50.5 per cent of the total athlete quota allocated to women.
So, who will come out on top in the revamped LA28 100m competition? The answer to that question will be the athlete who rises to the occasion on a winner-takes-all Saturday at the LA Memorial Coliseum.
