Meet Manisha Kalyan, The First Indian To Play In UEFA Champions League
Manisha Kalyan, a striker who played for Apollon Ladies FC in place of Marilena Georgious, made history by being the first Indian to compete in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. She came on in the 60th minute to replace Cyprus Marilena Georgiou as Apollon Ladies FC defeated Latvian first division team SFK Rga 3-0 in their UWCL debut at the Makareio Stadium. This is good news for the Indian football fraternity. Manisha’s historic achievement has given people cause to celebrate at a time when the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is banned by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). Manisha rose to prominence when she became the first Indian footballer to score against Brazil and was also named the AIFF player of the year. The 20-year-old became the fourth Indian women’s international footballer to sign with an overseas club.

Manisha has been phenomenal on the football field since a young age, and she was a member of India’s under-17 squad that competed in the BRICS Cup in South Africa. Her impressive performance in the 2019-20 Indian Women’s League led to her selection into the national camp. The latter led Gokulam Kerala FC to their first Indian Women League (IWL) title and was named the tournament’s emerging player. Her historic appearance in the current UEFA champion’s league will be a major step forward for Indian women’s football on the international stage.
