Meet The Youngest Indian Athlete At The CWG, Anahat Singh
She is only 14 years old and has already had the honour of representing her country at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022. Anahat Singh, a class 9 student from Delhi, is the Indian contingent’s youngest member, having qualified for the Games after performing well in the national selection trials.
In the final of the Asian junior individual squash championships for girls under 15, Anahat defeated Ena Kwong of Hong Kong 11-7, 12-10, 11-5 to claim the title. It was her first Asian title and eighth international title overall.
Before enrolling at Harvard University to earn her bachelor’s degree, Amira Singh, sister of Anahat Singh, was one of the nation’s top-ranked under-19 squash players. She still competes for the Harvard women’s squash team.
Anahat Singh, who is taught by her elder sister Amira Singh as well as former national-level squash players Amjad Khan and Ashraf Hussein, established herself quickly as the future of squash in India. Anahat quickly moved to the top of the under-11 category in India and then to the under-13 category, where she ranked first not only in India but also in Asia and Europe.
Anahat has been the talk of the Indian sporting world since she made her Commonwealth debut. In the Round of 64 of the women’s singles squash event, she defeated Jada Ross of St Vincent and the Grenadines 3-0. Anahat won the match with scores of 11-5, 11-2, and 11-0 and she soon started trending when she received a warm hug from her opponent. In her following match, she gave her all before losing to world rank 19 Emily Whitlock 7-11, 7-11, 11-4, 6-11 and failing to move to Round 16.
Despite a heartbreaking loss, this powerhouse of talent has firmly established herself as the future of Indian squash. Anahat has also qualified for the 2022 World Juniors Squash Championships, which will commence on August 9 in Nancy, France, and will be looking forward to some winning ways.
