Nykaa’s Falguni Nayar is India’s Richest Self-made Woman, Wealth Surges 963%
Falguni Nayar, the founder and CEO of Nykaa, has moved ahead of Biocon founder and CEO Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw to become the richest self-made woman in India, according to Kotak Private Banking Hurun Leading Wealthy Women List 2021.
Roshni Nadar Malhotra, of HCL Technologies, has topped the list for the second straight year with an estimated wealth of Rs 84,330 crore. She is the only Indian woman to lead a listed IT company. She is followed by Nayar, 59, with a net worth of Rs 57,520 crore.
Nayar is India’s richest self-made woman and the world’s tenth richest self-made woman. Nayar’s wealth grew 963%. Nykaa became the first Indian unicorn start-up led by a woman to launch an IPO in 2020.
Pharmaceuticals, which had 12 entrants, was the most common source of wealth for Indian women entrepreneurs, followed by healthcare and consumer goods contributing 11 and 9 entrants respectively.
Data shows Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and Suchitra Ella are the only self-made women on the List from the Pharmaceuticals industry, out of the 12 women on the list. 15 women in the list have doubled their wealth, with one-fifth coming from the industrial products industry.
Self-made women make up 31% of the list, and together they account for 39% of the combined wealth. Overall, 10 self-made women made their debut on the list this year.
Three professional managers made it to the list, with Pepsico’s Indra Nooyi topping the list with a wealth of Rs 5,040 crore.
Nine out of the twenty women under the age of 40 years or younger category are self-made, the list shows.
