UN Echoes Tripura Panchayat Leader’s call for Women’s Empowerment
At the fifty-seventh session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development (CPD57), the United
Nations Headquarters resonated with the resounding voices of female representatives.
The session was held on Friday.
These representatives hailed from India’s Panchayati Raj Institutions, with one particularly notable member from Tripura. They were the focal point of a side event titled “Localizing the SDGs: Women in Local Governance in India Lead the Way.”
Their compelling narratives and impactful endeavours held the audience spellbound, showcasing their inspirational journeys and groundbreaking projects.
Three renowned female Panchayat leaders including Supriya Das Datta of Tripura, Kunuku Hema Kumari from Andhra Pradesh, and Neeru Yadav representing Rajasthan showcased their pioneering efforts in uplifting women and girls.
Their endeavours spanned from addressing issues like child marriage to advancing education, economic inclusion, job prospects, environmental conservation, and sports. These narratives epitomized the resilience and effectiveness of women’s leadership in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The side event was organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Friday at the UN Headquarters Secretariat Building in New York, as part of the CPD57 session.
Supriya Das Datta, the Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati of Sepahijala district in Tripura, highlighted various endeavours geared towards uplifting women and girls. These include initiatives like building dedicated restroom facilities on governmental premises and witnessing a substantial increase in Self-Help Groups (SHGs) from 600 to nearly 6,000 during her tenure.
She stressed her dedication to fostering women’s involvement in decision-making processes and promoting their economic and social empowerment, drawing inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s motto of inclusive development for all.
Recognizing the obstacles confronting women, Supriya Das Datta launched ‘Your Story Must Be Told,’ an initiative initially aimed at providing a non-political platform for women to voice their concerns during Gram Sabhas.
This initiative evolved into ‘Tomader Sabha’ or ‘Mahila Sabha,’ serving as a space where women from diverse backgrounds can actively engage. Supriya emphasized the significance of magnifying women’s voices and ensuring that their concerns are not just acknowledged but also addressed.
The event featured keynote speakers such as Deputy Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations, Ambassador Andreas Lovold, and representatives from UNFPA, including Pio Smith, UNFPA’s Asia Pacific Regional Director, Diene Keita, UNFPA’s Deputy Executive Director for Programme, and Andrea M. Wojnar, UNFPA’s Representative in India.
