January 22 marks the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. But it may very well be its last. In a few short months we face the likelihood the Supreme Court will overturn Roe, endangering abortion access nationwide.
Before Roe, illegal abortions were causing untold suffering in the United States, especially for poor women who had to resort to unsafe self-induced or back-alley abortions. Even then, to many it seemed absurd that the government could deny a woman sovereignty over her own body. It is even more absurd in 2022 that in Texas—for the vast majority of women and girls—abortion has already been virtually outlawed. And a myriad of restrictions limit access to abortion in the U.S. for young women, women in the military and poor women, disproportionately impacting women of color.
