While some of them may be genuine buyers, there are people out there who have created fake accounts to first lure people and then rob them of their hard-earned money. And often the accounts look so genuine that it is hard to tell whether they have been created by a real user or a scamster. Recently, a person named Mel fell victim to a scam on Instagram. Mel had been searching for suits online and came across a fraudulent advertisement while scrolling through the photo-sharing app. She had recently joined Instagram to view her children’s posts. The ad claimed to offer a closing down sale at a store called Charles Tyrwhitt, which caught her attention. Since Mel was looking to buy smart work clothes for her son, who was about to start an office job, she expected to see targeted ads.
As per The Guardian, Mel wasn’t surprised to see the ad because she had been searching for suits and ties outside of Instagram, and she had clicked on other Instagram ads before, although she hadn’t made any purchases. The Instagram post promised a 40 per cent discount on all items and redirected her to a fake Charles Tyrwhitt website within the app. Trusting the offer, Mel used her credit card to place an order worth ã1,200 (approximately Rs 1,25,000) for shirts, suits, socks, and ties for her son. Unfortunately, the goods never arrived.
Notably, Instagram does not have a fixed cost for advertising, allowing advertisers to run campaigns for as low as one dollar per day. The company’s algorithms aim to efficiently spend the allocated budget within the advertiser’s limits. Sometimes, the goal is to reach as many people as possible at a low cost, while other times the focus is on generating more conversions, such as actual sales or sign-ups. This process is highly profitable for Meta, as evidenced by the company’s advertising revenue of $28 billion in the last quarter alone, accounting for 98% of its total income.
Unfortunately, many victims of fraud on Instagram and other social media platforms either didn’t report the incidents to the company or found it unclear how to do so. Those who did report their experiences mentioned that their complaints were not acknowledged by the company
Mel only grew suspicious when she realized she hadn’t received a confirmation email, and the ordered items hadn’t arrived within the expected timeframe of three to five days. She contacted the real customer service number of Charles Tyrwhitt and discovered that she had been deceived when they asked for her order number, which she hadn’t received.Although Mel was able to get a refund of ã1,200 from her bank, the incident left her feeling foolish. She reported the scam to her bank, which promised to inform Instagram on her behalf, so she didn’t directly report the incident to the social media platform.“I have been shopping online since 1997, and have never, ever been scammed before. But I am brand new to Instagram,” she said.
Reacting to the matter, a Meta spokesperson told the publication, “This is an industry-wide issue and scammers are using increasingly sophisticated methods to defraud people.We don’t want anyone to fall victim to these criminals which is why our platforms have systems to block scams, financial services advertisers now have to be authorised and we run consumer awareness campaigns on how to spot fraudulent behaviour.People can also report this content in a few simple clicks and we work with the police to support their investigations.”
