After 16 Years, A Medal For Indian Women’s Hockey Team At The CWG
Everyone who witnessed the bronze medal match between India and New Zealand at the Commonweath Games 2022 must have experienced a Chak De moment. The Indian women’s hockey team defeated New Zealand admirably in a shootout in Birmingham to win the bronze medal. This is the team’s first medal at the Commonwealth Games in 16 years.
Salima Tete scored the goal for India, and the team was ahead 1-0 at halftime. However, Olivia Merry scored a late goal for New Zealand just as the game was about to end, forcing a shootout. The team was prepared this time and was not ready to face yet another heartbreak in a penalty shootout. Skipper and the goalkeeper for the team, Savita, turned out to be the real hero, making three outstanding saves during the shootout, and Sonika and Navneet Kaur both scored past Kiwi goalkeeper Grace O’Hanlon.
The Indian players went on an aggressive attack and made multiple circle penetrations, but they were unable to get past the tough New Zealand defence. In the second quarter, the Indians kept up their momentum and enjoyed a greater portion of time on the ball, but they were still unable to break through the stout New Zealand defense.
The Indian women proved their determination to end their game with a victory and secure a podium finish after suffering a devastating loss to Australia in the semi final match that was well fought. “We knew it wouldn’t be easy, so before we came, we worked every minute and every second. I am so proud. We fought as a team,” Savita said after the match.
