India’s Squash Prodigy Anahat Singh Wins The U15 British Junior Open
Anahat Singh, India’s squash champion, had an eventful 2022, and her extraordinary performance continues this year as she wins the U15 British Junior Open championship. She has won this title twice, making her only the second Indian after Joshna Chinnappa to do so.
The British Junior Open is held annually in the United Kingdom in January, and the best players from around the world compete for the coveted title.
In the quarterfinals, 14-year-old Anahat won 3-0 over Harleen Tan of Malaysia. She advanced to the finals by defeating her Egyptian opponent Malak Samir 3-0. Even though the first set in the finals was close, Anahat ultimately prevailed over Egypt’s Sohaila Hazem with a score of 3-1.
Anahat was the youngest member of the Indian contingent that participated in the Commonwealth Games last year.
In an exclusive chat with Femina, Anahat speaks of her hard-fought victory: “I did not train specifically for the British Junior Open. Numerous important tournaments were scheduled last year in November and December, including the Asian Senior Team Championships in Korea at the beginning of November and the Senior Nationals in Chennai in December. I trained for them, and that carried me through to the Scottish Junior and British Junior levels.” The young champion has previously competed in and won the British Junior Open (BJO) title a couple of years ago. “I have reached the BJO finals twice and won in 2019, so I am familiar with the enormous competition,” Anahat reveals. “Since it is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the junior circuit, everyone trains incredibly hard to compete and win. Each time is different because the players are different, and because everyone has trained for it; you cannot take any opponent lightly and must perform at your absolute best.”
The squash prodigy is now excited about the tournaments she has coming up, and she has quite a few in the line-up. “The next tournament I’m looking forward to is the Asian Junior Team Championships, which will take place in Chennai from February 8 to 12, 2023,” she concludes.
