Gender Bias? No More! Priyanka Sharma Is Now UP’s 1st Woman Govt Bus Driver
In a historic move, the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) recently hired 26 women drivers for the state-run buses. Priyanka Sharma and others grabbed the opportunity to shatter gender norms. This made Priyanka the first woman in the state’s history to operate a government-run bus.
Priyanka, 31, was left to raise her two children on her own after her husband’s untimely death due to alcoholism. She moved her family from UP across India in search of a livelihood, living and working in places such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata. She completed her driving course and obtained the necessary licence, after which she applied for a position as a driver.
While many women prefer not to drive public transport vehicles for fear of harassment, UPSRTC’s decision to appoint women as drivers comes as a positive step. Priyanka expressed her gratitude to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing opportunities for female drivers like her.
Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) officials claim that there were no women drivers to drive “pink buses” when the state government first decided to introduce them a few years ago. Hopefully, more women will be encouraged to come forward and apply for and accept these positions as a result of this initiative.
Currently, Priyanka is driving a long-distance bus from the Kaushambi bus depot to Dehradun, Rishikesh, Meerut, Lucknow, Moradabad and Bareilly. Her first assignment behind the wheel was to drive 50 passengers from Kaushambi to Meerut. She hopes to obtain a permanent position in the government sector, which she believes will provide her with the wherewithal she needs to care for herself and her family.
Women such as Priyanka provide life lessons and are a driving force inspiring many other women.
