PT Usha Is All Set to Become The First Women President of IOA
PT Usha, India’s legendary sprinter, has been elected president of the Indian Olympic Association. The legendary sprinter will make history as the first athlete to have both represented their country and been appointed IOA chief since Maharaja Yadavindra Singh, who played a Test match for India in 1934. She will also be the first woman president to head the prestigious association.
58-year-old Usha, who won four gold medals at the Asian Games and finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles final at the 1984 Olympics, submitted her nomination papers for the position of president on Sunday along with those of 14 other members of her team for the various positions.
November 27th was the last day to file the nominations and she won the election unopposed. “Congratulations to legendary Golden Girl, Smt. P T Usha on being elected as the President of Indian Olympic Association. I also congratulate all the sporting heroes of our country on becoming the office bearers of the prestigious IOA! Nation is proud of them!,” Cabinet minister Kiren Rijiju took to his twitter account to congratulate the veteran athlete on her new position.
“With the warm support of my Fellow Athletes and National Federations I am humbled and honored to accept and file for the Nomination of the President Of IOA!,” Usha tweeted earlier regarding her nominations.
